License Practical Nurse Guide
An LPN, or licensed practical nurse, offers basic, direct healthcare to patients. Reporting to a Registered Nurse and / or physician, the responsibilities assigned can cover a wide area, and will also vary depending on the capacity and the capability of the individual. In other words, although there are some basic expectations in an LPN job description, the supervisor may allocate or delegate additional responsibilities according to his / her discretion.
The LPN job description includes, but is not limited to, these basic tasks:
1. Recording the patient's vital signs.
2. Obtaining all necessary information from the patient.
3. Administering injections and other medications.
4. Dressing and cleaning wounds.
5. Daily patient care and monitoring.
6. Preparing patients for tests, and arranging for the laboratory analysis and reports afterwards.
7. Providing feedback to superiors on patient conditions and complaints.
8. Teaching patients and family about tasks during recovery after being discharged from hospital.
An LPN, being used to responsibilities covering such a wide area, are capable of easily adapting into different sections of the healthcare system, whether it be in different sections of a hospital, or completely different settings. These may include focused settings such as a nursing home, home health care, clinics, a physician's office, military, and even federal government facilities.
Another dimension is added by the availability of LPN travel jobs, where an LPN will take on contract assignments, traveling to different locations of interest, and adapting to circumstances in another region, or country. Each region or country may have its own definition of an LPN job description, and this requires adaptability from the nurse. Travel jobs, however, have become popular due to the higher salary involved, and the ability to evaluate an employment scenario before applying for a permanent position.
The LPN job description covers a wide range of tasks for another reason. Many LPN's will continue their studies, and eventually specialize in a particular field of interest. By being exposed to a multitude of different tasks, it becomes easier to make career choices at a later stage, when specializing becomes an option. Having had exposure to different areas of healthcare will allow you to make a better, educated decision.
